The easiest way to find out more about Rugby is to ask a player on campus. The next best way is to come out for a practice. If it's the middle of a semester and you haven't a clue about rugby, come out anyway! We're always looking for interested athletes. If you are not a student at UVa., yet, and are interested in rugby, contact Coach Livett to arrange to see a home game and get a campus tour.
Rugby is a challenging, contact sport that attracts people of many athletic backgrounds. Skills in soccer, wrestling, track, football, and many other sports translate to the various positions. The 15 positions demand players of all sizes and skills. All that is needed to play is a willingness to learn new skills, commitment, heart and determination.
The Virgina Rugby Club fields a 1st and 2nd team squad of 22 players per squad. The club play in the Mid Atlantic Colleigate Premiership. As the club grows a further development squad will be established.
Practise
Practice is held four times a week at either Mad Bowl or Lambeth Field. Practise times are 4pm to 6pm Tuesday to Thursday. Monday is fitness day from 4.30pm to 6.00pm.
SeasonThe rugby season starts with pre season camp the week before fall semester begins. The Fall season has Virginia playing two warm up games prior to their league season in The Mid Atlantic Colleigate Premiership which consists of seven highly competitive games. The spring season beginnings upon the return to school in the spring semester. The spring season consists of development games, National championship competitions and The Atlantic Coast Invitational Competition, plus a Spring break tour.
EquipmentFor practise you will need: a pair of rugby shorts, a sturdy shirt , socks (available through the club), cleats, trainers and a mouth piece. It is also advisable to have a warm up pants and top. Club rugby kit can be obtained through the club at a later stage. Members are expected to purchase two pairs of official UVaRFC socks, an official UVa Warm Up suit. The official team polo shirt will be supplied to players by the club. Team playing jersey's and shorts are maintained by the club.
Financial RequirementsAs mentioned in the equipment section their is a requirement to purchase certain items in order to train and play rugby. The club also has a participants dues system that is paid by each member. These dues payments are split over the two season and are used to cover operating costs such as training equipment, travel costs, referee, rugby union and insurance fees, balls and also cover after match hospitality.
Academic RequirementsUVa. Rugby expect all players to maintain a strong academic performance.
Spring Break TourDuring the spring break the rugby club together with alumni and parents if they so choose, tour a selected geographic rugby region. There is a separate fee charged to any team member for these trips. While this tour is not mandatory, the experience is one not to be missed! More details regarding Spring break 2009 can be obtained from the coach.
Alumni and ParentsThere are usually two parents days one in each season. These are a great time for your parents to meet other rugby indoctrinee's and those with more game watching experience. UVaRugby has an active Alumni who return to the scene of their glory days to play the present 1st XV each fall. The Alumni members are also actively invited to the end of season banquet, and continue to be a source of great support, advice and aid for the development of the club.
The Rugby HouseThe Rugby House is the center of many of the team's social and team activities. The house can accommodate eight team members and is available on an annual basis.
